Coping with Crises: A Workshop for Dietitians Ball State University. Co-led discussion and role-plays for student-dietitians as they prepared for their first external placement. Dealing with Problem People Provided an hour and a half discussion on managing difficult people in small groups. Discussed limit setting and guidelines for referring problem people to professionals. Doormat No More Mount Carmel Health Centers. Provided an interactive seminar on assertiveness training – with a twist. Provided guidelines for limit setting without guilt and without an appeal to “rights.” Focused on priority setting and responsibilities. Get Rid of Clutter Mount Carmel Health Centers. Provided a humorous and interactive seminar on how to get rid of the material clutter that clogs people’s lives. Discussed the cognitive processes that lead to pack-rat-ism. Discussed strategies for de-cluttering. Made applications to office clutter and its relationship to work effectiveness and career advancement. Hot-Wire Your Brain Provided a lively six-session seminar series that used stories and illustrations to clarify sound psychological principles and theories. The goal was to present the information in such an entertaining way that the participants would remember the illustrations and apply the related concepts to change the way they think. Made application to work and relationships. How to Deal with Difficult Students Ball State University. Provided effective strategies for student services personnel working with problematic students. How to Give a Presentation Without Being Boring Ball State University. Provided a proseminar on giving interesting presentations to university staff and trainees. Introduction to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: A Workshop for Occupational Safety and Health University of Utah. Explained MBTI results and worked to build teams with a work group. Setting Limits on Time and in Relationships Presented a one-hour seminar to women on balancing relationship and time demands -- without guilt. Supervisor Training: Drugs in the Workplace The University of Utah. Provided bi-weekly substance abuse assessment training for supervisors in all work groups at the university. Discussed drugs of abuse as well as effective intervention strategies. Team Building and Conflict Management for International Teams Presented a half-day seminar to international teams from over 20 countries on effective strategies for building teams and resolving conflicts. Consulted with individual teams on specific conflict resolution. Time Management The Ohio State University. Provided time management strategies for a campus student organization. Time Management and Stress Reduction Presented a half-day workshop to community members on practical strategies for time management and controlling on-the-job stress. Unplugging the Christmas Tree Presented a workshop on identifying and reducing the stress related to Christmas. Integrated music, values and popular images of Christmas.
Career Decision Making Trained other mental health professionals regarding the issues related to career decision-making and its important role in personal health. Career Planning Trained approximately 200 students and their parents on issues related to career choice and career interest patterns. Addressed the connection between values and careers. Choosing a Career or College Major: The Student’s Looming Task Created and presented a 4-hour workshop for High School seniors to help them understand their unique set of skills, values and interests and how they related to career choice. Administered and interpreted the Strong Interest Inventory for each student. Labor of Love Provided a 30-minute message on the value of work and its proper place in a person’s life.
Current Drugs of Abuse Presented, along with a local police officer, information related to drugs used within the community as well as strategies for effective intervention. Drugstore Cowboy Ball State University. Presented the rationale used by many drug users as well as the differences between use and abuse. How to Keep Your Friends Alive: Symptoms of Overdose Ball State University. Provided an overview of signs and symptoms of overdose from alcohol and other drugs as well as effective interventions. If Someone You Love Drinks/Uses Too Much Ball State University. Recognizing when a loved one is abusing substances and what a person can do to help. (Mental) Performance Enhancing Drugs: Substance Use and Exceptional People Ball State University. Discussed the way that some notable people have used drugs in attempts to enhance their mental performance -- usually without success. Primer on Drugs of Abuse Ball State University. Taught an 8-hour workshop on basic information on drugs of abuse as well as an abbreviated workshop for the College of Nursing. Relapse Prevention Workshop The University of Utah. Led workshops for recovering substance abusers to prevent relapse. Sex, Drugs, Violence and Rock & Roll Ball State University. Wrote, produced and presented a multi-media presentation integrating music, lyrics, and slides of current advertisements to discuss the changes in drug use over three decades as well as the common myths about drug and alcohol use. Stoned Students: A Faculty Seminar on Identifying and Handling Substance Abusing Students in the Classroom Ball State University. Provided strategies for university faculty to appropriately identify and handle the difficult situation of impaired students in their classes. Substance Abuse Among People with Disabilities Ball State University. Discussed the similarities and the difference in patterns of substance abuse among people with disabilities -- specifically by disability and the reactions of others that enable the substance abuse. Substance Use Assessment Proseminar Ball State University. Taught graduate practicum students techniques and instruments of substance use assessment. Substance Use Interviewing Ball State University. Taught graduate students in counseling psychology principles of interviewing substance-abusing clients. Supervisor Training: Drugs in the Workplace The University of Utah. Provided bi-weekly substance abuse assessment training for supervisors at the university. Discussed drugs of abuse as well as effective intervention strategies.
Coping with Grief Provided a workshop for an on-going grief support group and on another occasion, for a Caregivers Support Group -- people who are caring for a person who is terminally or chronically ill. Mid-Life Issues Provided a 4-week workshop on typical issues, facts and fallacies faced by people in mid-life.
Attachment Theory and Its Practical Application to Your Baby Gave a practical discussion of attachment theory to mothers of toddlers and connected active parenting strategies to the child’s beneficial adult development. Building Healthy Relationships 1, 2 & 3 Presented a three-part seminar for building healthy relationships to a group of single adults. Communicating With Your Teen Provided a video-based workshop for parents who were interested in improving their relationship with their teenage children. Coping With Divorce Provided a workshop for people currently responding to a divorce. Couples Communication and the MBTI Provided a 3-session seminar for recently married couples in which they learned their MBTI type and its relationship to their spouse’s type. In addition, we discussed non-verbal communication in relationship development and discussed healthy communication patterns. Couples Communication Seminar Provided a fun 2-hour seminar outlining typical couples communication problems and their solutions. Data on Dating Provided an interactive discussion with middle school and high school students on how to date successfully. Divorce: Does It Affect You? Provided a one-session seminar for adolescents to discuss the effects of divorce on their lives. Goal Setting and Priorities for Couples Provided a 2-hour workshop to help couples determine the values and principles that guide their decisions. Worked to help couples discover ways to reduce less important activities in their lives in order to achieve long-term happiness. How to Keep the Fire Alive in Your Marriage Presented a 4-week series to young married couples on relationship enhancement strategies, conflict resolution, communication and sexual information. I Break Your Arm Provided a 30-minute message on the essential elements of trust and forgiveness. Men’s Blind Spots Discussed some of the difficulties that men have in developing relationships. Men’s Retreat on Intimacy and Relationship Building Led a workshop on the importance of intimacy for men as well as the principles of relationship building. Rape Prevention Led small group discussions about the negative effects of rape on men and women. Relationship Enhancement Workshop The University of Utah. Co-led a ten-session workshop on couples’ communication and relationship enhancement. Presented didactic material and supervised couples’ communication interactions. Relationship Enhancement Retreat for Couples Led a couples' relationship enhancement retreat which focused on planning for the future and resolving conflict. Relationship Risk Provided a 30-minute message on healthy relationship development and maintenance. Secrets of a Happy Marriage Provided a 30-minute message on 3 factors of a happy marriage. Secrets of a Successful Marriage Provided several workshops on improving the marital relationship. Discussed 8 factors in a successful marriage. Secrets of a Successful Marriage Provided a one-hour seminar on 3 factors in a successful marriage. Transforming Friendships Provided the content of a retreat for single adults interested in improving their relationship skills. Discussed the natural developmental stages of a relationship. Understanding Your Teen Co-presented a 5-week series of workshops for parents of teens. Discussed effective parenting strategies and described the normal developmental process in adolescents. Violence in Families Provided a small training seminar to assist lay people in recognizing family violence -- including spousal abuse, child abuse and elder abuse.
Attitude Change among Religious People: An Application of Kelman’s Theory Taught a lesson on the ways that Christian’s attitudes about their faith follow Kelman’s theory of attitudes and attitude change. Coping With Stress as a Christian Presented the General Adaptation Syndrome and rational restructuring strategies to a church group interested in reducing their environmentally induced anxiety. Counseling Seminar for Pastors Taught a daylong seminar on basic counseling skills for couples and family counseling to community area pastors. Introduced a referral questionnaire for evaluating mental health care professionals. How to Make a Referral to a Professional Counselor Ball State University. Provided a presentation for university staff teaching them how to make an effective referral for troubled students. Internet Abuses: How to Protect Your Family on the World Wide Web Presented, along with Internet expert John Sullivan, a seminar on some of the dangers on the Internet. Provided suggestions on ways to set appropriate limits on Internet use and some of the negative effects of compulsive use. “Just So” Workshop: Introduction to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Presented a four week workshop on identification and treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Overcoming Dental Fear Mount Carmel Health Centers. Along with John Johnson, DDS, provided a 2 hour participatory seminar to people afraid to go to the dentist. Examined the cognitive processes that prevented people from seeking dental care, provided exercises to reduce the fear of the dentist. Provided accurate information to participants to put them in control of their dental visit. Protecting Our Children: Preventing Child Abuse in Our Churches Along with Stan Willis (an attorney) provided a 2-hour seminar on motivating church child care workers on the potential danger points for child abuse in the church. Discussed the potential threats to children, safeguards to minimize risk, and the thought process of predatory people. Nurturing Pastor’s Wives Provided a seminar on ways that pastors could nurture their relationships with their wives. Presented three workshops for denominational leaders of the Grace Brethren Churches of Mexico during their annual convention in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. Presented on cognitive therapy, sexual compulsivity, and drug and alcohol abuse. Psychotherapy and Christianity: Oil and Water That Can Mix Ball State University. Discussed ways of integrating psychotherapy with a client’s religious values -- in spite of the animosity between the two schools of thought. Shut Up and Play Your Guitar: Counseling Skills for Church Leaders Provided a seminar for state pastors and lay leaders about effective strategies for counseling their parishioners. Also discussed making effective referrals to community mental health professionals. Stress on Campus Can Erase Religion Provided an all-day workshop on stress management for a campus religious group. Discussed the General Adaptation Syndrome, William Perry’s Cognitive Developmental Stages, cognitive-behavioral methods for reducing anxiety as well as healthy vs. unhealthy approaches to religion. Understanding and Developing Effective Treatments for Conservative Evangelical Christian Clients The Central Ohio Psychological Association/Capital University Continuing Education Lecture. Presented a two-hour continuing education lecture on how to interact effectively with conservative evangelical Christian clients. Presented the various world view assumptions of members of such groups and appropriate treatment interventions. Unity through Community Provided a participatory workshop for a church undergoing dramatic changes. Worked to help participants find common ground to prevent further conflict. Presented theories of work interest styles as a common ground for the disparate groups and worked to create cross-schism alliances based on more important values. |
